The Revival

After declining during the mid-20th century, Crop Over was revived in 1974 as a national cultural festival.

The revival brought new life to Barbadian traditions while creating opportunities for local artists, musicians, performers and designers.

The National Cultural Foundation (NCF) was subsequently established to develop and manage the festival.

Today Crop Over stands as one of the Caribbean's leading cultural celebrations.

The Story of Crop Over

A Celebration Rooted In History

Crop Over began during the late 1700s as a celebration marking the end of the sugar cane harvest in Barbados.

For plantation workers, the successful completion of the harvest season was a time for celebration. Communities came together through music, dancing, feasting and festivities after months of hard work in the fields.

One of the most important traditions was the ceremonial delivery of the Last Canes and final sugar cane cart to the factory, symbolising the end of the harvest season.
These celebrations became known as Crop Over.
